City trash collection covers eligible customers

The City describes “trash” as bulk materials such as tree limbs, brush, yard waste, old furniture and similar items. Service is provided to active customers who receive City garbage collection. Items must be prepared and placed according to the current rules.

Items and situations the City lists as unacceptable

  • Household garbage placed outside the cart
  • Hazardous waste such as paint, light bulbs, batteries and chemicals
  • Tires
  • Loose glass that is not safely boxed and taped
  • Waste generated by a compensated contractor, tree trimmer or similar paid person
  • Recyclable electronics that should be taken to the designated drop-off facility

Preparation rules that create private-hauling demand

All leaves and small items must be bagged. Limbs must be cut to less than eight feet long and eight inches in diameter. Trash must be clear of vehicles, mailboxes, fences and utility lines. Refrigerators must be empty and taped shut or have the doors removed. A private hauling team can be useful when the material is too large, the deadline is sooner than the municipal route or the work was produced by a paid contractor.

Multifamily and commercial properties

The City says multifamily and non-residential properties may be eligible for municipal garbage service. If they are ineligible or do not subscribe, they must contract with a licensed commercial waste hauler for private dumpster service. Apartment residents should check property rules before leaving bulky items near a dumpster or curb.

Local disposal facilities named by the City

The City states that Black Warrior Solid Waste Facility accepts garbage and Eagle Bluff Landfill accepts trash for City operations. That does not mean every facility accepts every item directly from the public. Hours, fees and material rules should be confirmed before transporting anything.
